Precision Plasma Cutter

You are here: Home > Product Center > Precision Plasma Cutter

Precision plasma is the high-accuracy tier of air plasma cutting. A constricted nozzle, optimised gas swirl, a shield gas cap and precise arc-voltage control compress the arc column to less than half the diameter of a conventional torch, giving a narrower kerf, a smaller bevel angle and a thinner heat-affected zone. The Icyrobot Max-AH and Max-HPR series span 200 A to 400 A and accept an optional gas console for independent plasma and shield gas adjustment.

Precision plasma vs conventional plasma

FactorConventional air plasmaPrecision plasma
Kerf width2.5–4 mm1.0–2.0 mm
Bevel angle (mild steel)3–6°1–3°
Edge squarenessFairClose to laser quality
HAZWider, thin plate distortsNarrow, minimal distortion
Cut speed (same thickness)Baseline20–40% faster
Consumable lifeLongShorter, more sensitive to gas and water quality
Equipment costLow30–80% higher

In other words, precision plasma buys accuracy and downstream labour savings, paid for with higher capital cost and stricter maintenance discipline. If your parts go on to a mill or borer, the machining hours saved are where the real money is.

The gas console handles precise mixing, changeover and closed-loop pressure and flow. Without it, changing gas means re-tuning by trial and error, and batch consistency and yield both suffer.

The complete gas decision tree is in Plasma Gas Selection for Stainless: Air vs Oxygen vs Nitrogen vs Argon-Hydrogen.

Models and positioning

Should you pay for a gas console?

Three self-tests: is stainless or aluminium more than 20% of throughput? Do edges need to go straight to welding or coating without grinding? Does batch-to-batch edge consistency affect yield? If any answer is yes, the console usually pays for itself inside a year through grinding hours avoided.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a built-in compressor run continuously?

The compressor has its own duty rating. For continuous high-current cutting, allow cool-down intervals per the compressor spec or switch to external air. For permanent fixed stations, use an external compressor.

Why does oxygen leave less dross on carbon steel?

Oxygen reacts exothermically with iron in the arc column, adding heat and improving molten-pool fluidity so the gas stream clears slag from the kerf more easily. The trade-off is faster nozzle oxidation, and it cannot be used on stainless or aluminium.

What nitrogen purity does stainless cutting need?

Industrial grade nitrogen, typically 99.9% or better. For heavy plate where finish matters, an argon-hydrogen mix is used. Follow the process table for purity and pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can precision plasma replace laser?

In 6-25 mm mild steel, edge quality approaches laser at much lower capital and running cost. Below 3 mm with tight holes and small radii, laser still wins.

Why does oxygen leave less dross on carbon steel?

Oxygen reacts exothermically with iron, adding heat and improving pool fluidity so slag clears the kerf. Trade-off: faster nozzle wear, and it cannot be used on stainless or aluminium.

When is a gas console worth it?

If stainless or aluminium exceeds 20% of throughput, edges must go straight to welding or coating, or batch consistency affects yield — any one of these usually pays back within a year.

Why did edge quality worsen after fitting a fine torch?

Usually gas pressure and flow were never set to fine-cut values, or the torch has a concentricity issue or no cooling water. Run a speed-versus-pressure coupon matrix first.
