Electroslag Welding Machine

Electroslag Welder

Consumable-nozzle electroslag welding machine. During manual wire feeding the wire stops automatically on contact with the workpiece, giving a very high fixed-point arc-start success rate. The machine is light and easy to move, so it can be used in positions that are difficult to reach. Heating is uniform and cooling is slow, which keeps welding stress low. Because the weld is made in the vertical position, the weld metal is unlikely to contain porosity or slag inclusions. It is particularly suited to medium and thick plate. The workpiece needs no bevel — only a fit-up gap — and the joint is completed in a single pass, so productivity is high. Welding current and voltage are shown on a clear digital display, and manual wire forward and reverse are provided. Applications Mainly for butt joints and T-joints in low-carbon steel, low-alloy steel and medium-carbon steel, and for large-section, curved and cylindrical welded structures. Widely used in steel structures and bridges.

Key Features

  • Consumable-nozzle electroslag welding: vertical seams in thick plate completed in one pass, no multi-layer multi-pass sequence
  • Square or simple V preparation, greatly reducing bevel machining
  • Productivity measured in metres per hour, shortening the schedule significantly
  • Low risk of inter-pass defects and a narrow heat-affected zone
  • Water-cooled copper shoes form the weld, giving a regular bead appearance
  • Wire stops automatically on contact with the workpiece for reliable fixed-point starting

Typical Applications

  • Diaphragm welds in high-rise box columns
  • Heavy machinery and large forged-welded structures
  • Thick-wall components for hydro and thermal power
  • Bridge box-girder diaphragm welds

Selection & Setup Notes

Electroslag welding pays off hugely in one specific case: vertical seams in thick plate, where one pass replaces dozens or hundreds of filler runs. Note the high heat input and coarse grain — important load-bearing members usually need post-weld normalising. See the electroslag welding machine section.

Frequently Asked Questions

How thick can it weld?

Routinely 30 mm to over 100 mm; the limit is set by source capacity, nozzle length and the shoe system.

Is it vertical only?

Yes — the process relies on gravity to hold slag and pool, so it runs vertically or close to vertical.

How is weld toughness handled?

Normalise after welding to refine the grain, or use micro-alloyed consumables with controlled heat input. Critical structures require impact testing.
