Stud Welder

You are here: Home > Product Center > Stud Welder

Stud welders attach studs, pins and anchors to plate or sections in a single operation — no drilling, tapping or riveting, and almost no marking on the reverse face. It is an extremely productive operation in structural steel, shipbuilding, bridges, curtain wall, automotive and appliance sheet metal. Icyrobot supplies both capacitor discharge (CD) and inverter drawn-arc stud welding systems.

Choosing between the two processes

FactorCapacitor discharge (CD)Drawn arc
Weld time1–5 ms100–1 500 ms
Plate thicknessThin (from 0.5 mm), almost no reverse markingMedium and thick (typically ≥ 3 mm)
Stud diameterMainly M3–M10M6–M24 and larger
Parent metal conditionNeeds conductivity; coated and galvanised sheet acceptableRust and coatings must be removed
PenetrationShallowDeep, high joint strength
Typical useAppliance panels, enclosures, decorative partsStructural shear studs, bridge connectors, shipbuilding

Products

Three process controls that decide quality

  1. Cleanliness of stud tip and parent surface. Oil, rust and coatings cause lack of fusion and spatter directly.
  2. Parameters and lift height. Lift sets the arc length: too long gives porosity, too short short-circuits.
  3. Gun perpendicularity and plunge force. A tilted gun causes one-sided fusion — the leading cause of site rework.

Finished joints are normally verified by visual inspection plus a 30° bend test or torque test; for batch site work, inspect first-off each shift.

Frequently asked questions

Can stainless studs be welded to carbon steel plate?

Yes — it is a dissimilar-metal joint, so parameters and possibly a transition layer must be qualified; for load-bearing joints run a procedure qualification first.

Can I weld on galvanised sheet?

CD welding can, but zinc vaporisation brings fume and porosity risk: increase ventilation and adjust parameters. For drawn arc, grind the zinc off locally first.

How is joint strength assured?

Drawn-arc joints are normally stronger than either the stud or the parent metal, so fracture in the base metal counts as a pass. Verify by visual inspection plus bend or tensile testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Capacitor discharge or drawn arc?

CD for thin sheet, no reverse marking and M3-M10 studs; drawn arc for medium plate, load-bearing shear connectors and M6-M24 or larger, with deeper penetration.

Can I weld on galvanised sheet?

CD welding can, but zinc vaporisation brings fume and porosity risk — increase ventilation and adjust parameters. For drawn arc, grind the zinc off locally first.

How is joint strength verified?

Normally visual inspection plus a 30 degree bend test or torque test. Drawn-arc joints usually exceed the stud or parent metal, so fracture in the base metal counts as a pass.
